Piloting Our Learning Design in A Minnesota Charter School (Grade 8)

We wanted to test our education design where it really matters: In a public school where 44.3% of students meet or exceed the student achievement levels.

Our Objective:
To support teacher instruction in the classroom with engaged hands-on learning, which is aligned to the learning sequence.

ASKING STUDENTS IN QUARTER 1

We asked students How they feel about science learning in their classroom (General interest, Note taking, vocabulary, prior learning, hands-on learning)

THE SURVEY RESULTS

53% of the surveyed New Millennium Academy students like science, 47% dislike science

THE STUDENTS THAT DISLIKE SCIENCE SAY...

30.6% think that classroom science is boring
12.5% don't see why science learning should be personally important
13.9% would rather watch paint dry
12.5% don't work hard at it
30.6% state that they get good grades anyways

THE STUDENTS THAT DO LIKE SCIENCE SAY...

9.9% of surveyed students think that classroom science is fun
39.5% get good grades
none of the surveyed students might consider a career in science
39.5% work hard but their grades are ok
11.1% think about science after the classroom
The average NWEA Score for the student population is 201 in the fall of 2021
